Originally from Los Angeles, California, DC Davis has had a passion for writing since the third grade. A literary connoisseur of everything from science fiction/fantasy to mystery and suspense and nearly everything in between, he recently released his first novel, a thriller titled The Red Writer.
When not writing, Davis can generally be found either in the gym or in front of his PlayStation or Xbox.
What inspired you during the writing of The Red Writer?
The Red Writer is actually a combination of two stories that had been rattling around my head for awhile; one based on two federal agents searching for a killer, the other a passionate tale of love and heartbreak. I felt neither had the strength to stand alone, so I combined them.
Your writing has a very cinematic feel to it. Who plays your main characters in the movie adaptation of The Red Writer?
Special Agent Devin Knight is an amalgam of some of my favorite actors: Will Smith, Don Cheadle, and Columbus Short. Either would make a great Special Agent Knight. Special Agent Victoria Sanders is a combination of famed MMA fighter turned actress, Gina Carrano, Gina Torres (Firefly, Angel), and Sara Ramirez (Grey’s Anatomy). I’d love for Carrano to play her in a film.
What book do you wish you had written?
I wish I could have stamped my name on the Song of Ice and Fire series. It’s so epic and iconic.
What advice would you give to any authors looking to self-publish their first book?
For your first time around, just focus on finishing. It’s a long, hard road, but it’s worth it when you get to that last period. And hire a professional to edit your work. Trust me on this!
What are you most proud of? And what is your biggest regret?
I’m most proud of finishing and publishing The Red Writer. My biggest regret is not going into the military straight out of high school.
What makes you feel nostalgic?
Sitting with my best friends and reminiscing about the things we did as kids.
What do you enjoy most about Los Angeles?
The weather and the nearly endless possibilities and activities. If you’re bored in LA, you are a boring person.
In your opinion, what is the best twist ending in a book or movie?
That’s a tough one… The Sixth Sense pops into mind first, so I’ll go with that.
What’s the best video game you’ve played recently? What made it stand out for you?
The Mass Effect series. Without a doubt the best sci-fi series and story in a video game. Amazing settings, characters, elements, gameplay. Love it!
You recently completed a cross-country road-trip. What are your favorite driving songs?
“Cruising” by D’angelo, “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line, “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and anything by AC/DC.
What are you working on next?
I have a ton of projects on my plate and having a hard time picking just one. I think I’m going to focus on a YA series titled The Mystical Tutelage of Parker Stone, the story of a young boy who learns there’s real magic in the world and embarks on a journey to learn all he can about the mystical world, and the high price of knowledge and power.
