Best-selling author, playwright and entrepreneur Dee Dee M. Scott’s motto is “The sky is not the limit; the limit is higher than the sky” and with her extensive resume of creative works, she is certainly doing her part to live up to that motto.

Born and raised in Florence, South Carolina, Scott exploded onto the scene in 2009 with her debut novel, My Husband’s Woman, a tale of love and deception which Scott later adapted into a stage play that toured South Carolina and continues to successfully tour to this day. The play earned Scott The Golden Pen Playwright Award, and the Columbia Theater Review named her Playwright to Watch in 2013.

Scott’s follow-up novel, Sent From Heaven, was released in 2013, and she recently wrote the screenplay and served as an assistant director for Lake House, a psychological thriller that will hit select theaters in 2016.

When Scott isn’t writing, she runs Awesome Scott PR Firm & Talent Agency with her husband and heads her non-profit, Joseph & Kathy Gregg’s Child, which provides theater and acting classes for children, teens and adults.

Dee Dee M. ScottWhat was your childhood like? And how did it shape who you are today?

I had a very strong mother. She put all the knowledge she could into me at a young age. We didn’t have much, but she made sure I was not limited. She had me involved in dancing workshops and kids groups that allowed me to travel and see different places at a young age. My dad, Joseph G. Gregg, his sisters and my family on his side were good readers, singers and writers. I watched them, and so it came naturally to me to follow them and do the same. Because of my childhood, I learned not to put myself in a box. I learned to never limit myself or to let anyone else limit me.

Growing up, who were your biggest creative influences?

Langston Huges. I read all of his poetry books when I was twelve and in my early teens. I loved it! His writing taught me to be expressive and colorful with my own writing.

What inspired the story of My Husband’s Woman?

My healthy imagination and me wanting to write a story about infidelity in a way that it had never been written before. The story had been in my head for quite some time. However, I never wrote it out. I didn’t write it until after I recovered from an illness. I suffered with a severe case of anemia that had me down for almost a year. I promised God that if I got well, I would not hide any of the gifts he’d blessed me with. Once I was well, I hit the ground running, and My Husband’s Woman was the first book I released.

What sort of challenges did you face in adapting My Husband’s Woman into a play?

I was an author and I knew nothing about how to adapt my book into a stage play. I had to take time out to study. I spent almost two years studying the craft, and then some more time to actually write and revise my stage play.

What do you find most enjoyable or fascinating about writing romance stories?

The characters and the stories they tell me. It is amazing how the characters unfold as I type. They tell the story and sometimes I am surprised at the twists and turns I go on with my characters.

When you’re in search of inspiration, where do you turn?

I take a break and recharge my brain. I meditate, read the bible and spend time relaxing with my family.

Do you read reviews of your own work? If so, how do they affect your approach to future projects?

Yes, I do. I’m thankful to the people who take the time out to review my work. However, reviews do not affect my approach to future projects. My husband gave me some good advice that stuck with me. He said: There will never be one thing that everyone in the world likes. People are different. I understand that my books are not for everyone. I target my work to my audience and focus on people who like to read and watch the types of content I produce.

What’s the best horror movie you’ve seen recently?

I love horror movies, but I have been so busy with post production of my latest movie, Lake House, that I have not had time to go to the movies. Lake House is a psychological horror movie a twisted plot and ending that you won’t see coming! It will be released to theaters on 2016.

What are you working on next?

I am working on a new film and a television series based on my book. Also, I am working with the authors signed to my publishing company to produce and bring their stories to the screen.
